Toyota 2AZ-FE Engines: Why the Same Engine Code Doesn't Always Fit
The Toyota 2AZ-FE is a 2.4-liter DOHC VVT-i four-cylinder, and it's one of the most common engines Toyota ever built. That's why so many people search for a used 2AZ. It's also why so many people order the wrong one.
One code, several engines
Toyota used the 2AZ-FE across a long list of vehicles and years. Along the way it changed. Different versions have different mount positions, especially on the timing side of the engine. An engine can match your 2AZ-FE code exactly and still not bolt into your car because the mounts are in the wrong place.
In practice, 2AZ-FE engines fall into several separate fitment groups. A unit from one group isn't a drop-in for a vehicle in another group.
Examples from our own inventory
- Our 2AZ-FE listings for the Camry are grouped with the Camry Solara and the Highlander of the matching years.
- The RAV4 is split: a 2004-2005 RAV4 uses a different 2AZ group than a 2006-2008 RAV4. That's why we list them separately.
- The Matrix, Corolla XRS, Scion tC, Scion xB and Pontiac Vibe use 2AZ versions that are separate from the Camry group.
Each 2AZ listing on our site states the exact years and models that unit is listed for. If your car isn't on that list, ask us before you order.
