Toyota 2ZR-FXE Hybrid Engines: 2010-2015 Prius vs. 2016-2022 Prius

Toyota built two versions of the 2ZR-FXE hybrid engine. One fits the 2010-2015 Prius, 2016-2018 Prius V and CT200h; the other fits the 2016-2022 Prius and 2020-2022 Corolla Hybrid.

Toyota 2ZR-FXE Hybrid Engines: 2010-2015 Prius vs. 2016-2022 Prius

The 2ZR-FXE is Toyota's 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle engine for its hybrids. The code stayed the same across two generations of the Prius, but there are two different versions of the engine, and one from the earlier group won't drop into a car from the later group. Here's how to tell them apart and which one your car needs.

2010-2015 Prius, Prius V and Lexus CT200h

This is the first 2ZR-FXE, introduced with the third-generation Prius. Toyota rated it at 98 hp at 5,200 rpm in the 2010 Prius.

  • 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with VVT-i
  • Beltless design: an electric water pump and no accessory drive belt
  • Cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and an exhaust heat recovery system for faster warm-up

2016-2022 Prius and 2020-2022 Corolla Hybrid

For the fourth-generation Prius, Toyota re-engineered the 2ZR-FXE. Toyota says the new engine reaches a maximum thermal efficiency of 40 percent, which it called the world's highest level for a mass-produced gasoline engine at launch.

  • A large-volume cooled EGR system and a redesigned intake port for better combustion
  • Redesigned coolant passages and a more compact exhaust heat recovery system
  • Less friction from the piston skirts, rotating parts and oil pump, plus low-viscosity oil
  • Rated at 95 hp at 5,200 rpm in the 2016 Prius

Why they don't swap

Both versions share a name and a displacement, but the later engine was redesigned for a newer generation of Toyota's hybrid system. The intake, EGR and cooling changed, and each engine is matched to the hybrid transaxle, wiring and computer of its own generation. Treat them as two different engines and order the version that's listed for your year and model.

Also don't confuse either one with the 2ZR-FE or 2ZR-FAE used in the non-hybrid Corolla, Matrix, Scion xD, Scion iM and Pontiac Vibe. Those are conventional engines, not a substitute for a hybrid 2ZR-FXE.
