JDM J30A Engine for the 2005-2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L and Touring - Replacing the 3.5L VCM

The short version: if the 3.5L V6 in your 2005–2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L or Touring is done, a JDM 3.0L J30A is a direct replacement. It runs on your Odyssey’s original ECU with no reflash, and it fits those two trims only.

Why 2005–2006 Odyssey owners end up looking for an engine

The EX-L and Touring were the Odyssey trims that got Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management, which shuts off cylinders when cruising to save fuel. VCM-equipped Honda V6 engines are widely reported for burning oil, fouling spark plugs and wearing out engine mounts. By the time an Odyssey from these years needs an engine, the original 3.5L often has a long history of exactly that.

Replacing it with another used US-market 3.5L means buying an engine with the same miles and the same history. A low-mileage JDM J30A is a different route.

Why a 3.0L can replace your 3.5L

Different size, same job. The J30A is a 3.0L V6 from the same Honda family, and it bolts into the 2005–2006 EX-L and Touring in place of the original 3.5L. It uses your Odyssey’s transmission and engine mounts, and the factory wiring harness plugs straight in.

The part buyers worry about most is the computer, and it is the part you don’t have to touch: the Odyssey’s stock ECU runs the J30A as it is. No reflash, no aftermarket tune.

Being honest about the trade-off: it is a smaller engine than the one it replaces, so expect a little less power than the original 3.5L.
